Years back I had a boyfriend who gave me the first book on self improvement tips for my Birthday. I remember how amazed I was reading such simple but extremely powerful thoughts. As time passed my bookshelf grew bigger and bigger. I have read tons of books on psychology, coaching, self improvement, motivation, the law of attraction, body language and so on. This got to a point that I had to make myself commit to a very serious new rule: No more new books until I finish reading all of them!
Although I have learnt self improvement tips and realized amazing theories from the wonderful authors, the most powerful knowledge came from my own journey of self-discovery. I have tried many techniques, filled out a lot of psychological tests and did hundreds of exercises, but the following ones turned out to be the most effective above all!
Here’s 3 simple and effective self improvement tips and tools:
1) Get a Diary!
Get yourself a notebook and start to write a personal diary. You don’t need to write a novel and since it’s only for you, it doesn’t matter what your style of writing is. I usually write only bullet points and include thoughts and memories that are worth mentioning. I focus on the following areas:
- What made my happy in my day? What am I grateful for?
- What fears I had during the day?
- Did I feel any intense emotion, if so why?
- Weird or unique stuff (like a strange dream, meeting someone special, a learning etc.)
Once my diary is full I keep it and read even years back. This way I can see the progress I’ve been going through. You know how awesome it is to face that you are no longer afraid of your dreams for example? (Like becoming a life coach and launching this blog!)
2) Ask Yourself Provocative Questions!
A question is the simplest tool of inspiration. It happens to me time to time that I can’t make a decision or I am uncertain about something. If I don’t know the answer, I try to find the right questions to ask. Or if I fear something I just ask myself why, until I dig deep enough to get the answer. Some of my favourite questions are:
- What will be the consequence if I don’t make the change?
- How do I want my day to look like in 3 years from now?
- What can I do today to feel happier and more content in my life?
- What am I really afraid of?
- What is the worst thing that can happen?
3) Meditate 10 Minutes a Day!
I don’t want to scare you away as meditation usually freaks people out as it’s considered to be a method of ‘stopping your thinking’. Well, that’s not the case, as it’s impossible. Try not thinking about a pink elephant. Can you do that?
So all you need to do is sit in a comfortable position for 10 quiet minutes and start to breath deeply. There is several ways of meditation and relaxation, I now suggest you a pretty simple one: focus on your breathing and label what you do in your mind. For example: Breathing in. Breathing out. If you have thoughts coming: Thinking. If you hear a noise, just label: Hearing and so on.
This exercise will help you to become mindful and the more you practice, the more often it will happen, that you don’t get engaged with your thoughts and emotions. Therefore you will start to see the real side of life, not the one that is covered up by your expectations, judgements, beliefs and fears.
I also take some time in my meditation to visualise what I really want in life. I repeat positive affirmations, I send love to the ones I love and visualise things I’d like to manifest in my life.
I truly encourage you to step on the path of your own self-discovery and improvement journey as it will help you:
- Clear your goals and dreams
- Be more confident in achieving them
- Feel more gratitude for the things you have in life
- Meet the right people who will inspire you
- Pursue your life passion
- Be happier in your professional and private life
The elevator to self improvement is out of order. Use the stairs, one step at a time!
