Before jumping into figuring out how to be happier in your life, let’s look at this question:
How often do you feel happy?
Every other day or almost never? Or you have absolutely no idea? Maybe you feel happy at one part of your life but another one seems like a disaster?
I used to think about how happy am I and one time when I was deep in the ocean of my thoughts I realised that no matter how positive I seem, I feel happiness quiet rarely. This came as a shock as I was doing great in my job, I had a nice boyfriend at the time, my apartment was really beautiful and I even had the time and money to travel to amazing places in the world.
So how is it possible that we all search for happiness, we want to feel it in every area of our life, but still, there are so many unhappy people? Even though we do a lot of self-work, hobbies that we like and activities that fulfil us.
The million dollar question remains: How to be happier in our lives?
Well, this is a question I can’t answer for you. Thank God! As if I would tell you what makes You happy, I’d probably be wrong or worse, lying. As the answer lies within you and you are the only one that can really figure the answer out to this essential question!
What I can do, is help You sort it out!
One of the main reason why so many people are not happy or don’t even have a clue how to be happier is that there are a bunch of negative beliefs and thinking patterns covering it up. We’ve been conditioned to live our life without asking this simple but extremely important question: What makes Me happy? We go to high school, then to college or get a job, get married, buy a house, a car and so on. But along the way we forget who we are and what we really want in life. We just follow what everyone else is doing!
It’s like our happiness is buried 3 feet deep in soil so we have to dig deeper in order to reach it!
Here’s 3 simple steps on how to be happier:
1.) You have to start to listen to your thoughts!
This means taking quality time with You, to be calm and quiet, which is usually very tough for people, especially for those, who have never done it before. Without your friends, children, your phone or computer. One of the simplest tool to do this is to write a personal diary when you have 5 quiet minutes. All you need is notebook and a pen!
2.) Now start to list out all the things that make You happy!
You don’t have to write a novel, just bullet points. Keep it simple! Don’t limit yourself! Write down everything that comes to mind, no matter how crazy it may seem! If you are unsure, think about how it makes you feel. Do you feel motivated, enthusiastic, happy, energetic? You are on the right track!
3.) Now look at your list of happiness!
Which two things can you start to implement right away?
Underline them, or use colors to highlight the two things you will do this week! Make happiness plans for the month as well. Next month do the exercise again. Sometimes we make a fake list of happiness, as we are writing things that are promoted to us by society, family, media etc. The more you practice, the better you’ll become!
