“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. Confucius
For years I was thinking I should quit my job, leave my corporate carrier and follow my dreams, step on the path of my real life passion. But I was lost, confused and afraid, so it took me a very long time to make the move. I had a well-paying job with great benefits, amazing team around me, but I felt I needed to do something else, but I didn’t know what it was. When I finally quit my job I decided to take a long rest and travel through South East Asia for a while. Now I only work on projects I have passion for and things are going really great for me!
There were a bunch of things that no one could prepare me for or advise me on, so I had to learn it the hard way! But at least these experiences made me stronger and more determined that I chose the right path, as I am following my dreams, which make me very happy!
I wish I knew these things before I decided to quit my job:
1, Leaving is not easy, don’t fool yourself that it is!
You might be the type of person who makes decisions quickly, right on the spot, but most of us have a hard time deciding things. It is really tough to step out of your comfort zone and leave a company, especially if you’ve been there for a long time!
Should I quit my job? List out pros and cons on a piece of paper! Add in feelings as well, not just rational arguments! Most of us make decisions easier if we see our options visually!
2, Some people will support you, but many will think you are crazy!
It is unrealistic to think that everyone will notice how cool you are for quitting your job, for a better one, a different career or maybe to take time off or travel. People judge other people and it is based upon their own limitations! You got to trust yourself that you are making the right decision, otherwise people might pull you back!
3, It’s a bumpy roller coaster ride!
Your heart wants to move on and quit. Your mind wants rational pros and cons! When your heart and mind is in battle, you are on a bumpy rollercoaster ride! You will feel strong and determined one day and like a fool for wanting to change the next day! Just accept this!
4, You might feel you are losing your identity!
We think our profession, job, car, possessions are part of who we are! So if we let it go, we kind of lose who we are. I for instance thought I am not worthy anymore if I don’t fulfil an important position in work, I felt lost. Once I realised this, it was easier to make the change!
Be mindful if you identify yourself too much with your job! If so start to let this go!
5, It takes time and effort to figure out the next step!
When we are in stress and we’re working day and night for a long time it’s hard to see through the forest, as the trees are blocking the view. Give time for yourself to relax and rejuvenate your mind. Take this opportunity to list out your dreams, what you want to achieve, what makes you happy!

6, It’s a unique journey of self-discovery!
You will learn so much on the way about yourself, that I strongly suggest you write a personal diary, just with bullet points about how you feel, what you think about and what your dreams are. Reading these notes later on will be extremely helpful to understand yourself better! You will improve in ways you can’t even imagine right now!
7, It is f*ckin’ awesome to follow your dreams!
There is absolutely nothing better (okay, maybe sex) than to build up the life of your dreams! Start to work on what you really want! It is possible to make positive changes and transform Your life to happy!
Ask yourself: Do I need to make a change and quit my job? List out pros and cons on piece of paper! Add in rational arguments and emotions, feelings as well! Or I just need to get my motivation back in my current job? There is no right or wrong, whatever your real answer is, that is your truth!
